Science Behind Feng Shui

It Is All About Balance

Feng Shui is a tradition Chinese study of a man’s relationship to his surroundings. Feng Shui literally translates to “wind” and “water” in English. Feng Shui is based on the harmony between you and your home, and the impact made by air, land, and water.

How Feng Shui Works?

In traditional Chinese philosophy, natural phenomena can be classified into five elements: earth, water, fire, wood, and metal. Feng Shui is mainly based on the productive and destructive properties of these five elements.

Science or Superstition?

Whether Feng Shui is a superstition or not, the influence in the art behind Feng Shui can be difficult to dispute. This website will introduce some teachings of Feng Shui that offer some psychology or environmental science behind them. Sofa in the living room

Feng Shui

  • Doors should NOT be behind your sofa. If there is a door behind your sofa, you will lose your money.
  • Sofas should be placed against a wall. Having a wall in the back means there is always something on your back to protect you.

Scientific Explanation

  • A thief can’t be seen when you are resting on your sofa and chatting with your family. You may lose your money due to inattentiveness to your blind spots.
  • A wall in the back can feel more secure and relaxed when you are resting on the sofa. If your sofa is not against a wall, you may notice that you’re constantly repositioning the sofa; Every time you sit on it, you may nudge the sofa. If the back of your sofa is a walkway, you may get distracted every time someone walks behind you.

Mirror Facing Your Bed

Feng Shui

Don’t place a mirror facing your bed. In Chinese, the word “mirror” is composed by letters “metal” and “reflection”. Metal can be a weapon and hard to break. Because of that, mirrors are enhanced tools to empower energy. However, one’s energy is weaker when they are sleeping; a mirror can be used a weapon.

Scientific Explanation

From a psychological perspective, this principle makes sense since any type of movement reflected by the mirror will alarm you. Therefore, a mirror facing the bed can disturb your sleep. If you don’t get enough rest, you won’t have a healthy life and it will affect your work performance.

Dinning room and the door

Feng Shui

Your dinning room should NOT face your door.

Doors often bring negative energy into the house. When you open a door, the negative energy from outside seeps into the house and hits your dinning room. Your fortune also gets drawn outside by this energy.

Scientific Explanation

You should concentrate on your meal. It is good for your digestion and general health. If there is a door in front of your dinning room, you will get distracted. This principle is comparable to the theory that you shouldn’t watch TV when you are eating.

T-Junction Houses

Feng Shui

Don’t live in a T-junction house. The main reason Feng Shui’s negative bias of T-junction houses is the fact that the energy is rushing too strongly from the road towards the house.

Scientific Explanation

Speeding cars hit T-junction houses more often, making the house’s position a precarious one. Therefore, Feng Shui suggests you to place a rock or plant some trees to avoid the accident. Moreover, the traffic, car lights, and noise will disturb your sleep and make you uncomfortable.

Desk facing the window

Feng Shui

The position of facing a window is called “Look at the sky” in Feng Shui. It is one of the taboos in Feng Shui.

Scientific Explanation

It is similar as dinning room not facing any door. A window can distract you from studying. You may be disturbed by noisy traffic or moving objects.

Kitchen and Bathroom

Feng Shui

The elemental attributions of kitchens and bathrooms are fire and water respectively. The energy in kitchen and bathroom will have a destructive conflict, like fire and water fight each other.

Scientific Explanation

From a hygienic perspective, bathrooms gather a lot of bacteria that can be transmitted by air to the kitchen. The bacteria will then contaminate the food you are eating and go further to effect your health.

Trees

Feng Shui

You should NOT plant a tree in the centre of the garden. In Chinese characters, “trapping” is written as a wood in the centre of a square. Having a tree in the centre looks exactly like the character "困" meaning “trapping”. Trees are also considered to contain more negative energy since they cast large shadows.

Scientific Explanation

Trees will stop sunlight from reaching your home. Trees will bring more water into the area. It rains often in Asia, so they try to avid humidity. Moreover, trees produce dried leaves and have a lot of insects in them. Insects and dried leaves all have hygienic issue and bad for your health in long term.
